NURS 380 Dimensions of Nursing (3)
This course is designed for RN students as a bridge to the organizing framework of the curriculum and to professional nursing.  Patricia Benner’s concept of Novice to Expert will provide the RN student with a foundation for the domains of practice and competencies of the professional nurse. Philosophy of nursing, historical evolution of nursing, and implications for the future are emphasized.  The ethical and theoretical foundation of nursing practice within a changing health care system is analyzed. Processes and values guiding professional practice are discussed, as well as the expanded role of the professional nurse within the health care delivery system. (Prerequisites: RN license, admission to the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program)
NURS 385 Teaching, Mentoring, and Health Promotion in Nursing (4)
This course will prepare the RN student with teaching and presentation skills appropriate to the nurse’s teaching-coaching role. Principles of adult learning, characteristics of learners, barriers to learning, foundations of the educational process, learning theory, assessment and evaluation of learning, health behaviors and change, writing objectives, instructional methods, instructional materials, and using technology in teaching will be discussed. Students will evaluate on-line sources of health information, evaluate evidence-based teaching practices, and research primary literature. Students will demonstrate professional teaching and communication skills to groups, participate in peer evaluation, and complete a service-learning project teaching health-related information to members of the community. Prerequisites: RN licensure; admission to the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
NURS 391 Nursing Theory and Research (4)
Provides students with the conceptual basis for understanding nursing theory and the research process. Students receive broad exposure to nursing theorists with a specific focus on the nursing theory of Patricia Benner. Students critique nursing research reports and begin to evaluate research findings for application to nursing practice. Prerequisites: admission to the nursing or RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program; Math 150, (Existing Course, using existing syllabus).
NURS 450 Older Adults in the Community (4)
The course focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of aging, and the teaching/coaching role of the professional nurse in health maintenance and promotion.  The student performs diagnostic and monitoring functions through assessing the health patterns and the environmental factors impacting the community-dwelling older adult client. Community resources available for providing health care services will also be identified.  Clinical application of theoretical concepts is provided. The course provides a forum for developing a knowledge base in theoretical concepts in community health and some practical skills for working in diverse communities, while providing opportunities for reflecting on community service experiences. The student will complete a service-learning project related to the older adult in the community. Prerequisites: RN license, admission to the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program; Co requisites: NURS 380, ANTH 160 or SOC 105.
NURS 470 Culture, Health, and Illness (5)
The course explores cultural diversity and its influence on healthcare and disparate health outcomes. Cross-cultural views of the body, caring, healing relationships, gender, pain, ritual and stress will be explored, as well as the role of integrative modalities in health care. Other topics that will be addressed will be global health, bioterrorism, and principles of genetics and genetic influence on health. Students will research a topic of interest related to diversity in-depth and write a report of their findings. Students will also complete an approved course or workshop in community emergency response training. Prerequisites; RN license: admission to the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, NURS 380, BIOL 111, SOC 105 or ANTH 160.
NURS 410 Leadership/Capstone (6)
A capstone course provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate competency (skills, knowledge, and attitudes) gained in previous course work, clinical experiences, and service-learning. Using a seminar format, this course will expose students to concepts in leadership, organizational theory, group dynamics, power, problem-solving, change, conflict, and legal/ethical aspects of practice. The role of monitoring and ensuring the quality of health care practices is examined. All nurses are leaders at various levels in the communities in which they live and work. Thus, this course will emphasize a capstone service-learning project. Independent reading, group assignments, and a student-led journal club will highlight important concepts in leadership. Students will demonstrate leadership skills by completing an ABCD or organizational assessment, designing and completing a service-learning project, and disseminating reflections to their fellow students in a poster or podium presentation. Students will also complete their professional portfolios.  Prerequisites: RN license: admission to the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, NURS 380, NURS 385, NURS 390, NURS 450, and NURS 470.
